The world's economic systems do not adequately acknowledge the valuable role nature plays in planetary and human health. The degradation of land, freshwater and marine ecosystems undermines the well-being of billions of people and costs about 10% of the annual global gross product. At the same time, the restoration of nature presents enormous economic opportunities. The idea of a Nature-Positive Economy (i.e. an economy that considers environmental impacts and sustainability while actively working to improve the state of nature) as well as the pathways towards implementing an NPE remain poorly understood.
The project's ambition is to contribute to the systemic transformation needed for a Nature-Positive Economy through collaborative multi-stakeholder research and innovation to provide clarity and guidance for policy, industry and society. GoNaturePositive! adopts a dual strategy, focusing on actions to demonstrate the potential of nature-positive sectors such as agroecology and green buildings, and in parallel, high-impact actions to benchmark the performance of mainstream businesses on nature-positive criteria and support them to put in place transition strategies.
Five EU and one global pilot (covering Agri-Food, Forestry, Blue Economy, Tourism & the Built Environment) will be co-created with industrial, political, NGO and societal stakeholders. In GoNaturePositive! we will deliver a clear definition and conceptual framework for a Nature-Positive Economy, a roadmap proposing policy and governance pathways towards a Nature-Positive Economy, blueprints for ground-breaking solutions to stubborn roadblocks, and demonstrations of what a Nature-Positive Economy could look like on the ground.
